Librarians' Index -Over 6,600 compiled by public librarians in information supply business. Highest quality sites only. Great, reliable annotations.

The Internet Public Library: Youth Division -Online library for all students. Quite extensive.

The WWW Virtual Library -Non-commercial directory of the Virtual Library. An expert-run catalog, focusing on academic topics.

About.com -About 1 million Generally good annotations done by "Guides" with various levels of expertise.

LookSmart

Infomine -Over 20,000 great, reliable annotations. Co-operatively compiled by university & college-level, academic librarians of the UC campuses.

Magellan

Deep Web Content- information that is stored in databases as well as multimedia that is "invisible" to search engines.

Search Engine -for specific information. Some of the most popular search engines on the Net only cover between one and four percent of all Web sites.

Google -Perhaps the largest search engine on the Web, capable of searching 1,247,340,000 web pages.

Teoma - Subject-specific popularity searching.

AltaVista -One of the largest and most comprehensive search engines available, it searches the entire HTML file.

Excite -Concept searching is a strong feature for narrowing down the search.

HotBot -Has some unique search features that make this a very useful search engine, including sorting results by date or media type.

Infoseek -One of the most accurate engines on the Web; pays close attention to all search terms and the Boolean logic specified.

Educational Search Engines

EJournal Search -Online electronic journals, and library services such as electronic reserve with access to course materials. Electronic theses, dissertations and digital images. Special Collections, including rare books, manuscript collections, and the University Archives.

ERIC -Search the World Wide Web sites of all ERIC clearinghouses and components.

Education World -a search engine for educational web sites only, designed to be a resource guide for educators. Their goal is to make it easy for educators to integrate the Internet into the classroom

Teaching & Learning on the Web -A large, dyanmic, searchable collection of hundreds of web sites that are used for learning.

Metasearch sites or metacrawlers send searches to several search engines (their best use is to find hits on obscure items or to see if something is on the Internet.)
