What classes do 6th graders take?
Each 6th grader takes four academic subjects--math, language arts, social studies and science. Students on the PRIDE team have art as part of their daily schedule for the full year. Students on the RED team have art for daily for half of the school year and general music for the other half of the year. Student on each team participate in two quarters of physical education, a quarter of health class and a quarter of computer class.
If they like, students may sign up for chorus and/or band.
Where do the classes take place?
All 6th graders change classes. Academic classrooms are all grouped closely together so that students are merely traveling across the hallway to get to the next class. The only time students travel outside of this cluster of classrooms is to go to the gymnasium, cafeteria, art room, band room or chorus. Computer instruction is also delivered in the student’s classroom using laptops. Students have access to laptops on both teams.
What is the schedule like?
The middle school schedule operates on a seven day rotation, A through G days. All students attend each class for approximately one hour every day, but the time of day of each class rotates from day to day. Band and chorus each meet two times per week; students participating in band also have lessons on individual rotating schedule. 6th grade teachers will spend time the first few weeks of school helping students understand the schedule. It really isn't that difficult to get the pattern of rotation.
Twice every seven days all THMS students meet for a period called Pridetime with their homeroom teacher and an assigned teaching partner. During Pridetime, students get to know their classmates and the teachers through discussion and fun activities.
Each grade has a thirty-minute lunch period that occurs at the same time every day. Students can bring their own lunch or purchase the hot lunch offering, the salad bar, or ala carte items.
